Denver Veterans and military family members perform in an original stage production of The
Telling Project at the Auraria Campus from July 30th – August 3rd.

The Telling Project (TP), Veteran Artist Program (VAP), Campus Compact of the Mountain West
(CCMW), and the Bob Woodruff Foundation will present an original production of Telling:
Denver July 30th – August 3st, 2014 at Saint Cajetans on the Auraria Campus, in conjunction with
the Colorado Veterans in Higher Education Summit. Nine participants, consisting of Veterans
and military family members, will tell their own stories on stage in front of a Denver audience
under the direction of The Romero Theater Troupe. The Auraria Campus is hosting Telling:
Denver through the support of Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Veteran and Military
Support Services Office, in partnership with the SECond Mission: Service|Education|Careers
Initiative for student Veteran success through CCMW.

In preparation for this one-of-a-kind production, Telling: Denver participants will undergo
interviewing and performance training, acquiring tools to activate their community through the
arts. Delta Force, Marine Corps combat correspondents, Vietnam special operations, combat
nurses – these are a few of the perspectives this performance affords, all from Denver and
Colorado-based Veterans and military family members. Telling: Denver will be the 16th
production by The Telling Project. The Telling Project has been featured by the New York Times,
Washington Post, NPR, CNN, MSNBC and others, and performed at The Guthrie Theater
(Minneapolis), The Library of Congress, Portland Center Stage, Maryland Center for the
Performing Arts and others.

Written by Jonathan Wei, directed by The Romero Theater Troupe and produced by BR
McDonald, Telling: Denver features nine Veterans and family members, including Tabitha
Bennett, Jenn Calaway, Gina Fasciani, Josh Hamann, Richard McKee, Sarah Plummer, Anastasia
Pyzhov, Jim Stevens, and Megghan Stevens. Cast members represent Veterans from four
branches of service and include military family members as well. More information and tickets

DreamYard Bronx Collaboration

On Saturday, June 21st, three VAP filmmakers spent the day in Hayden Lord Park in the Bronx gathering stories and footage of families, students and children of the local community to begin the process of building a Bronx Collaboration that includes The Mission Continues, DreamYard, VAP and The Telling Project, among others.

Veteran Artist Program (VAP), founder BR McDonald is coming from New York to the Mobile Museum of Art to talk about art, war, and story-telling on June 5, 2014, for Artillery, a program on post-service creative process, healing, and advocacy. VAP, a 501c3 nonprofit, takes artists who are also veterans, and propels their work and career into the mainstream creative arts community through networking, mentorships, collaborations with professional artists, and original productions. Based in New York City, VAP creates programming across the country to expand the network and visibility of veteran artists. Come whether you are a veteran, and artist, or an advocate and find out how to support veteran art and create opportunities in your community. Presentation starts at 7pm, Light refreshments, beer and wine by donation.

ABOUT Thursday Nights: On Thursday evenings the art museum opens its galleries for an additional four hours, free of charge and courtesy of the City of Mobile. Programs in music, theater, film, design, visual arts, dance, literature, as well as culture and lifestyle are presented every Thursday night. Legacy of Valor

MARCH 7-APRIL 24, 2014. The Manatee County Agricultural Museum and Palmetto Historical Park of Florida have been accepted as a partner in the 2014 Legacy of Valor campaign, a project rallying the community to honor veterans, inspire patriotism and pass freedom on to others. The Legacy of Valor will also host an art show featuring Veteran Artist Program (VAP) participants March 7-April 24, 2014. Artists may sell their work at this show through the Agricultural Museum. Army Week Soldier For Life Award

VAP is partnering with Army Week Association’s Soldier for Life Award Competition to create two awards to be presented during Army Week NYC and Army Week NOLA in June 2014. The design competition aims to be an annual juried design competition that honors the best veteran artists to provide them publicity and recognition of their creative skills. This award should embody what Soldier for Life stands for – a lifetime of service to their country and community.

– The design should be able to be held in one hand, no more than 10 inches tall and have a base that allows the award to sit on a table or mantle. The Soldier for Life award should capture the following traits as well as reflect the region in which the award will be given (New York City and New Orleans):
– The Soldier for Life award will be presented to a veteran of the United States Army
– The awardee has succeeded in transitioning into a prosperous career
– The awardee is a pillar of their community
– The awardee must be dedicated to the veterans cause and be “paying it forward” for the next generation of soldiers

Design Competition Prize
1st place in each city
– Present award alongside Army Week representatives
– Receive recognition and promotional considerations on VAP and Army Week websites
– Two (2) seats at the Army Week Gala
– One-night stay in NYC or New Orleans
2nd/3rd place
– Receive recognition through Army Week and VAP social media channels
– Two (2) seats at Army week gala

Design Competition Timeline
– March 1st – 15th, 2014: Letters of inquiry are accepted via VAP website
– March 24th, 2014: Top 5 designs for both NYC and New Orleans are notified via email and additional information is requested
– April 1st – April 30th: Top 10 designs battle it out for most Facebook image shares on Army Week’s and VAP’s Facebook Page. The public will decide the top 3 designs based on the most shares of each design
– May 1st, 2014: VAP, Army Week and industry partners will announce the winners and runner-ups
– May 1st – May 30th, 2014: Design winners create and finalize selected awards
– June 1st – 7th, 2014: Army Week NOLA Week of Events
– June 8th – 15th, 2014: Army Week NYC Week of Events

In order for a good design award to be fair, and to ensure that the competition is fair, financial independence is of importance together with award jury and methodology. The Army Week Association’s Soldier for Life Award Competition does not permit sponsors to take part in the competition.


Pentagon Veteran Artist Exhibit

VAP organized and launched the first-ever Veteran Artist exhibit at the Pentagon in conjunction with the Pentagon Art Curator and the Patriotic Art Series. 50 pieces of work were selected from over 400 submissions and 30 states. (link to Solider Mag article) The show will be on display through Veterans Day, 2014.

MLK Day of Service

JANUARY 2014. VAP was asked by long time partner The 6th Branch to film their new 2014 PSA. After the success of the VAP PSA, many VSO partners have reached out to VAP to help them reach a larger audience through innovative and creative advertising. VAP brought together New York and Baltimore-based veteran filmmakers to capture the amazing work of this veteran-led organization.
